How can a non-U.S. resident open a U.S. business bank account with doola, and what are the requirements?
doola partners with Mercury (and, if needed, other fintech banks like Slash and Relay) to help you open a US business bank account as a non-US resident, even without a Social Security Number. To open the account, you'll generally need:
1. A US-registered company (LLC or C-Corp) and its formation documents, such as your Articles of Organization.
2. An EIN (Employer Identification Number) issued by the IRS.
3. Valid passport or other government-issued ID for each owner with 25% or more ownership.
4. A physical address for your business, and a clear description of your business activity, including any projected US activity. If you don't have bank statements yet, banks may accept other proof of business activity, such as invoices or contracts. Your registered agent address may be accepted as your legal address, but banks generally ask for a separate physical address where you run your business, and may ask for proof of it. Here's how doola helps simplify the process:
1. **Formation and registered agent:** doola provides your US company formation documents and a US registered agent address, which you can use as your legal address where the bank allows it.
2. **Guided application:** doola walks you through completing Mercury's application fields correctly and tells you what supporting documents you'll need.
3. **Card delivery:** Mercury generally ships physical cards within the US, so as an international founder you may need a US forwarding address to receive yours. With your doola formation documents, a valid physical address and any proof of business activity you have, you can apply for a US business bank account without being physically present in the US. doola also helps make sure your EIN and operating agreement information line up correctly, since mismatches between the two are one of the most common reasons international applications get rejected.
