Mercury accounts: eligibility, documents, and rejection reasons
To apply for a [Mercury](https://mercury.com/partner/doola?irclickid=VMzT2vR-6xycTsJxqOWFlWTJUkpRTAXPYT%3AoyU0&irgwc=1&afsrc=1&ir_partnerid=4009982&ir_adid=1659379&ir_campaignid=19270) business account, you generally need a US-registered company, an EIN, a physical business address, and identification for qualifying owners. Mercury reviews each application, and meeting these requirements does not guarantee approval.
## Eligibility and verification
Opening an account through [doola](https://www.doola.com) requires meeting Mercury's requirements, U.S. banking regulations, KYB/KYC verification, and Mercury's internal risk criteria.
To qualify, you generally need:
- A U.S.-registered business (LLC or C-Corp)
- A valid EIN issued by the IRS
- A physical address where you run your business (it can't be a registered agent address, a virtual office or a P.O. Box), with proof of address, such as a utility bill or bank statement
- A clear description of your business, including any U.S. operations you expect within 6 months
- Every owner with 25% or more ownership to pass ID verification (this threshold comes from federal beneficial-ownership rules that apply to banks). You'll need to submit:
- Articles of Organization or Formation
- Your IRS EIN confirmation letter
- A passport or government ID for each owner with 25%+ ownership
- Proof of your physical address (utility bill, bank statement, etc.). Even with everything in order, Mercury may still reject an application for reasons such as:
- KYC mismatches, like a name or address inconsistency, a blurry ID, or an expired passport
- Inconsistent business information across your state filing, EIN, and application
- Business activity that Mercury or its partner banks consider unclear or high-risk
- Country-of-residence restrictions (Mercury works with many international founders, but not all)
- An EIN that hasn't yet fully validated in IRS systems
- Missing or unverifiable proof of address
- Internal compliance decisions Mercury is not legally able to disclose. These are decisions Mercury makes under federal banking law, not decisions doola makes.
