Documents for tax filings and US residency certification (Forms 8802 and 6166)

For business tax filings, doola's tax team confirms the documents you need based on your entity type. US tax residency certification is a separate process: you apply to the IRS using Form 8802 to request Form 6166. doola does not currently prepare or submit those applications. ## Documents for tax filings Keep the following on hand throughout the year: bank and credit card statements for accounts related to your business, financial statements or bookkeeping records, receipts for any expense over $75, details of any business assets, sales invoices and records of the cost of goods sold, and an itemized breakdown of any large cash withdrawals. Expenses under $75 generally don't need a receipt on file. ## US tax residency certification If you need to certify your US tax residency, for example to claim treaty benefits with a foreign tax authority, the document you'll ultimately need is Form 6166, the official Certification of US Tax Residency. To get it, you submit Form 8802, Application for United States Residency Certification, to the IRS; Form 8802 is the application, and Form 6166 is the certificate the IRS issues once it's approved. You can prepare and submit Form 8802 directly to the IRS or work with a tax professional.
