Do I need to file a 1099 for contractors I paid?
If you paid an independent contractor or another non-employee for services, you may need to send them Form 1099-NEC and file it with the IRS.
The reporting threshold depends on when you made the payment:
- Payments made in 2025: $600 or more.
- Payments made on or after January 1, 2026: $2,000 or more. This amount will be adjusted for inflation in later years.
Form 1099-NEC is generally due by January 31 of the year after the payment, both to the contractor and to the IRS.
Some states have their own 1099 filing rules, which may differ from the federal threshold.
doola can guide you on the requirements. Filing remains your responsibility unless you purchase doola's 1099 filing add-on service.
