LLC Formation and Maintenance Costs by State
LLC costs usually break down into **two types of fees**:
1. **A one-time filing fee** to form your LLC with the state
2. **A recurring fee** to keep your LLC in good standing
- This is usually **annual**
- In some states, it is charged **every two years**
Missing the recurring fee is one of the most common reasons an LLC gets **administratively dissolved**.
## Choosing a state based on cost
A lower fee does **not** automatically mean you should form there.
### If you are a non-US resident
You can form your LLC in **any state**. You are **not required** to form in the place where you live.
For non-US founders, **Wyoming** and **Delaware** are the two most common choices. That is largely for reasons beyond just fees, including:
- **Privacy**
- **Flexibility**
- How well-understood their LLC laws are to **banks and courts**
### If you are a US resident
It usually makes more sense to form in **your home state**.
If you form in another state, you may also need to register as a **foreign LLC** in your home state. That can mean paying and maintaining **two states' worth of fees** instead of one.
## Why exact dollar amounts are not listed
Fees change over time, and each state sets and updates its own:
- Filing fee
- Annual or biennial fee
- Franchise tax
Because of that, there is no fixed dollar table here.
If you want the **current fee for a specific state**, or specifically for **Wyoming or Delaware**, check your dashboard or ask the doola team so the current fee can be confirmed before you file.
