What is IRS Form 6166 (Certification of US Tax Residency)?
Form 6166 is an IRS letter certifying US residency for income tax purposes. To request it, submit Form 8802 to the IRS. doola does not currently prepare or file these applications.
## What the certificate is used for
The letter is printed on U.S. Department of the Treasury stationery and confirms that you or your business is a resident of the United States for income tax purposes. You'd use Form 6166 to show a foreign government or foreign payer that you qualify for reduced withholding rates or other benefits under a tax treaty between the U.S. and that country, instead of being taxed at the higher rate that applies to non-residents. It can also support exemptions from value-added tax (VAT) in some countries.
## Requesting the certificate
The IRS issues Form 6166 after approving your Form 8802 application. Your tax advisor can help you request one if you need it.
