What is IRS Form W-8BEN-E?

IRS Form W-8BEN-E, officially the Certificate of Status of Beneficial Owner for United States Tax Withholding and Reporting, is filed by foreign entities. If your business is foreign-owned by another company (rather than an individual) and that foreign entity receives nonbusiness income from the U.S., such as rent, dividends, interest, or royalties, it files this form to certify its foreign status. It works the same way as Form W-8BEN, which individuals use, except W-8BEN-E applies to foreign entities rather than foreign individuals. The applicable U.S. withholding tax rate on that income depends on the form and any tax treaty between the U.S. and the entity's home country.
